Adam Smith's Stoicism and Self-command

چکیده
With different nuances, the Stoics’ influence on Adam Smith and the Scottish Enlightenment is generally taken for granted. The many references to the Stoics, mainly in Smith’s TMS, and the importance of this classical tradition within the Scottish Enlightenment, have led scholars to acknowledge this apparently obvious influence. However, this influence is at times more elusive than obvious. If there are clear traces of this ‘famous sect’ (TMS Adv.) in Smith’s legacy, first of all it is difficult to refer to Stoicism as one unified philosophical system, and secondly, some well-known features of Stoicism bluntly contradict Smith’s ethical conceptions.

Salim Rashid (1990) purports to have established some facts about Adam Smith's scholarship, significant among which are (a) Smith's plagiarism, (b) the poor quality of Smith's arguments or ideas compared with those of his predecessors or contemporaries, and (c) Smith's inconsistent arguments regarding laissez faire. Alas, Rashid's case is faulty, as well as often misleading and vexatious. This ...

In describing Adam Smith's acknowledgments as "neo-plagiarism" (Rashid, 1990), was trying to characterize a situation where a scholar either borrows ideas from others but provides no acknowledgment, or had access to fruitful and important ideas yet seems to have ignored them. These can be two quite different issues, and I am indeed guilty of inadequately distinguishing between them. A scholar w...

The connection between Adam Smith and Alasdair MacIntyre is not evident at first glance. In fact, those who know MacIntyre's work might bristle at the association. MacIntyre is inherently anti-capitalist. He believes that moral people ought to reject the modern state and large-scale corporations. 1 He also rejects what he terms the enlightenment project, claiming not only that it failed but tha...
